Why flashing firmware on the router

There are many reasons why you would want to flash a firmware of your D-Link DIR 615 E4 router:

  • Upgrading the stock firmware to new version
  • Downgrading to old version (for some reason – stability / features that might not be available in the new version)
  • Issues with current flash
  • Installing Custom Firmware like OpenWRT or DD-WRT

After you obtained your Firmware file, open your router’s GUI in a browser (most successful reports were on old versions of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer and portable versions for downloading of first two you can find in the Troubleshooting guide posted above). *** If you’re not sure, [Win]+[R] to open “Run” window => type

cmd

press [Enter].
In a cmd window, type

Ipconfig

press [Enter].
See what the “Default Gateway” is of your Ethernet connection and connect to that in a browser.

. If you didn’t change your settings, then the username is “Admin” and there is no password.
. Goto => Tools => Firmware
. On the bottom of the page there will be an option to choose the file you downloaded and [Open] it.
*** You will receive a message that “UPLOAD SUCCEEDED” and it will take about two minutes to flash. After flash is done the router will reboot.
